Hi Stacie, I really enjoyed reading your blog post about hemp building materials. I was amazed to learn about these extraordinary applications of hemp in construction, which were unknown to me. You did a great job of explaining the benefits of hempcrete, hemp insulation, hemp flooring, and hemp roofing.

But what caught my attention the most was the hemp rebar and its strength compared to steel rebar. By having these characteristics of strength, sustainability, and ecology, it seems an extraordinary option for construction. But I have some doubts about it: is a hemp rebar more expensive than a steel rebar, and what is the approximate price difference? Being a product of plant origin, is it really fire-resistant?

I would appreciate it if you could answer these questions or point me to some sources where I can find more information. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and passion for hemp building materials!

      Pablo,

Thank you for reading my review about hemp building materials. Hemp is a very extraordinary plant and amazingly versatile. I am glad you found my review not only educational but also intriguing.

To answer your question about hemp rebar being just as strong if not stronger than steel rebar, I have a second opinion from that of Hemp Traders. This one is from CANDAWEST Foundation, you can locate the section by scrolling to Steel is out, Hemp rebar is in of Energy Innovation Brief | Issue 21 | Spoiled Crops New Energy | Steel is out, Hemp rebar is in | etc…

Not only is Hemp rebar cheaper to make, it can be made on-site on demand as well. I found that very interesting.

Thank you again for your interest in Hemp Building Materials. Stop by anytime.

Wow, this is a lot to digest, but I’m genuinely fascinated by the idea of using hemp in construction. I mean, it’s kind of a game-changer when you think about sustainability and eco-friendliness. I had no clue hemp could be so versatile; from HempCrete to hemp rebar and even flooring!

But there’s something nagging at me. You say that hemp rebar is 2x stronger than steel rebar, which sounds too good to be true. How can that be? And is this backed by any substantial research or case studies? Because if it’s that strong, why aren’t we seeing it in more large-scale projects?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for green alternatives. I just want to make sure that we’re not sacrificing quality or safety in the name of sustainability. So, do you have any data to back up these claims about hemp rebar?
    please let me know

    Lou.

      Lou,

Thank you for reading my post on Hemp Building Materials From Hemp Traders, I am glad you found the article informative.

Thank you for the question about the Hemp Rebar. First I will start off with why it has not been widely used over the past 70 + years. See in the 1930s, the Drug Wars started, and while Hemp is not a drug at all, its cousin Marijuana was labeled a drug.

This relation ended up getting Hemp lumped in along with Marijuana. Up till this point, farmers were not only growing hemp on large scales, but they were also able to pay their taxes with it, which quickly turned into going to prison for growing it.

Once hemp was made illegal, farmers of course had to stop growing the plant, and even shipping in the fibers was a huge deal with customs. Even if Hemp Rebar was invented before the 1930s, it would have been terminated as a product due to being illegal to grow and manufacture the main component.

I can certainly understand the desire for proof of my statements. I, being a builder, was blown away by these claims of how superior hemp is to almost all building materials. I also required proof. So I did my homework and found that Industrial Hemp fibers and curd provide some of the finest building materials you can ask for, with very little carbon footprinting.

Hemp Traders claim that their Hemp Rebar is 2x stronger than steel rebar. It has been tested as well, follow this next link to see the results, or you could also view their site and see the results of the stress tests performed.

I was astounded at the flexibility and stability of hemp in construction, and I will definitely recommend Hemp Building materials to anyone who asks my opinion.

I hope you find my response as informative as my article, thank you again for stopping by and taking interest.
